The Gaflenzer Kaibling ( 1167 m above sea level ) is a mountain in the Ybbstal Alps in the Lower Austrian - Upper Austrian border area.
The Gaflenzer Kaibling is an elongated, gentle and largely wooded mountain range, which is limited in the southeast by the Ybbstal with the valley town of Opponitz , and in the northeast by the Gaflenzbachtal, a tributary of the Enns , with the valley town of Gaflenz . In the south, the Saurüssel pass ( 552 m ) connects the Gaflenzer Kaibling with the higher Hegerberg ( Lärmerstange , 1477 m ). Geologically, it is mainly composed of main dolomite .
The mountain range has a striking, around seven kilometer long ridge that stretches from west to east from the Holzerkogel ( 962 m ) over the main summit ( 1167 m ) to the Breitenauer Spitz ( 1152 m ), Hinterberg ( 1131 m ), Hirschkogel ( 1078 m) ) and Wetterkogel ( 1115 m ). The Upper Austrian-Lower Austrian border also runs along the ridge to the Hirschkogel. In front of the Hirschkogel to the north is the Forsteralm ( 1024 m ), another one-thousand- meter peak.
The Gaflenzer Kaibling is particularly well developed for tourism in the northern part. The Forsteralm ski area is located here on the Upper Austrian side on the slopes of the Forsteralm summit and the Hirschkogel. The ski area has a four- person chairlift , six drag lifts and 18 kilometers of ski slopes, the operation ran into economic difficulties and was therefore taken over by 8 communities from the Enns and Ybbstal valleys in autumn 2016. By July 7, 2017, almost a third of the financing requirements for a planned snowmaking system had been collected via crowdfunding . Also in the same region on the Lower Austrian side is the managed Amstettner Hut ( 923 m ) (approach: 1½ hours Gaflenz, 2½ hours Opponitz). The summit of the Gaflenzer Kaibling can only be reached via unmarked paths (1½ hours from Amstettner Hütte).
