Großau (municipality of Ertl)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Großau is part of the Ertl municipality in Lower Austria .

The scattered settlement is located southeast of Ertl at the junction to Maria Neustift .

Probably in the middle of the 18th century a deposit of hard coal was discovered in Großau. In a report by the Federal Geological Institute it is stated that there were already numerous structures in Großau in 1754. These extended between the Ortmühle in the east and the Ramingbach in the southwest. Most of the mining activity was in the trenches around the Großau inn and in the immediate vicinity of the Maigraben, and this coal was of the highest quality. Mining intensified in the 19th century and came to a standstill at the beginning of the 20th century, although attempts to restart it were made until after World War II .
