Nikolaus Kempf

Nikolaus Kempf (* around 1415 in Strasbourg ; † November 20, 1497 in Gaming ) was a mystic and theologian .

Kempf was born around 1414/1416 and studied in Vienna from 1433 to around 1440 . In 1440 he joined the Carthusian Order of Hermits ( Kartause Gaming in Austria ). From 1451 to 1458 he was prior of the Gaming Charterhouse. 1447 to 1451 and again from 1462 to 1467 he was prior of the Slovenian Carthusian monastery Pleteriach ( Slovenian Kartuzija Pleterje ); 1467 to 1490 he was prior of the Slovenian Carthusian monastery Geirach (Slovenian Kartuzija Jurklošter ). He returned to Gaming as a simple monk in 1490, where he died in 1497. He became known for his mystical, monastic and educational writings.
