René Monse (born September 28, 1968 in Potsdam ; † June 7, 2017 in Magdeburg ) was a German heavyweight boxer.
Amateur career
As an amateur, René Monse was a GDR youth champion several times and in 1989, with a win against Maik Heydeck , was the last GDR super heavyweight champion. In 1990 he took part in the World Cup in Dublin and was third, he failed in the semifinals to Félix Savón . In 1991 he took second place behind Bert Teuchert at the German championship in the heavyweight class , and in 1993 and 1994 he was German super heavyweight champion.
In 1994 Monse won the chemistry cup and the military world championship in Tunis , at the world cup in Bangkok he finished second after a final defeat against the Cuban Savón.
In 1995 Monse took part in the amateur world championship in Berlin , but lost in the semifinals to Vitali Klitschko and finished third. At the military world championship in Rome in 1995 , he also finished third, where he lost in the semifinals to the Russian Alexei Lesin .
Another third place he achieved at the 1996 European Championships in Vejle . A blow from Paolo Vidoz after the end of the round in the quarterfinals Monse went to the ground. Vidoz was disqualified and Monse was declared the winner, but on the advice of the ring doctor, Monse was denied participation in the semi-finals against Lesin. In that year Monse also took part in the Olympic Games in Atlanta for Germany , but failed again in the quarterfinals against Lesin.

professional
In 1997 he became a professional and was under contract with the SES boxing team in his hometown of Magdeburg, his coach was Werner Kirsch.
In 2000, after defeating Willi Fischer, he won the International German Heavyweight Championship. However, he became known in the two fights for the European championship against Luan Krasniqi . In the first encounter on January 5, 2002, he managed a knockdown in the second round, but he finally lost the fight just on points. In the second fight on July 31, 2004, he lost prematurely after his corner had thrown in the towel at the beginning of the seventh round. Afterwards Monse did not return to the ring.
Monse was married and had 4 children. Two from a second marriage and two children from a first marriage. He worked as an independent insurance agent in Magdeburg. His son Steven Monse is a former U20 basketball player and was on the squad for several Bundesliga basketball teams .
