Karl-Heinz Bußert (born January 8, 1955 in Brandenburg (Havel) ) is a former German rower and current rowing trainer who started for the GDR . In 1976 he won the Olympics in a double foursome.

Career

Bußert grew up in the Kirchmöser district of Brandenburg and began rowing at BSG Motor Plaue . His talent was discovered in the training center there, supervised by SG Dynamo Potsdam , and he was soon delegated to the sports club in Potsdam. Here his career began, where he achieved most of his successes. In 1975 he finished second in the GDR championship in double sculls , but for SC Dynamo Berlin. The following year he went to Montreal as a substitute for the 1976 Olympic Games . After Martin Winter failed with appendicitis, Bußert moved into the quadruple and won the Olympic gold medal with one second ahead of the boat from the Soviet Union. For this success he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver.

In the following years Bußert was a fixture in the double fours of the GDR, he won five world championships in a row by 1982, but was absent from the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. In 1983 he lost with the double scull at the World Cup against the boat from the Federal Republic of Germany. This was the first defeat of the GDR double foursome since the boat class was included in the program of world championships in 1974. In 1984 Bußert rowed with Rüdiger Reiche in double sculls and also won the title fights in the GDR, but missed the 1984 Olympic Games because of the GDR's Olympic boycott . 1985 Bußert competed for the last time with the GDR double fours and won silver behind the Canadian boat, for which he again received the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver.

Bußert is a trained maintenance mechanic and was then a member of the SG Dynamo Potsdam member of the German People's Police . In addition to sports, he studied political science and, after graduating, moved to the district authority of the German People's Police in Potsdam. Today he is a trainer at the Brandenburg State Rowing Association and a member of the successor club of SG Dynamo Potsdam, the Potsdam Rowing Society .
