The Potsdamer Ruder-Gesellschaft e. V. (PRG) is a sports club from Potsdam . It was founded on February 28, 1990 in the course of the political change . In 1991 the rowing club took over the rowers from SG Dynamo Potsdam , which was dissolved at the end of 1990 and whose history dates back to the years 1883/1910 and 1928. The PRG is one of the most successful rowing clubs in Germany and has produced numerous Olympic and world champions in rowing .
The club house is located on the west bank of Lake Templin north of the railway bridge of the Berlin outer ring . The PRG is a member of the German Rowing Association (DRV) and the Brandenburg State Rowing Association (LRVB).
history
Foundation and early years
The PRG was founded in 1928 through the merger of the two older Potsdam rowing clubs "Rowing Club des Westens 1910" and the rowing department of the "Berlin Sport Club". Despite the founding year 1928, the club with the name "Potsdamer Rudergesellschaft von 1910" took over the history of one of its predecessor clubs. The first boathouse was located on the east bank of the Potsdam Havel in the south-eastern area of downtown Potsdam. In 1940 the PRG merged with the "Potsdamer Rowing Club" from 1883, which until then was the second oldest rowing club in the city and had an exclusively male membership. As a result of the mergers, the PRG also had access to other boathouses near Glienicke Bridge and Potsdam Lustgarten .
In the course of the Second World War , the association lost all of its boathouses and properties due to fire, destruction or confiscation.
SG Dynamo at the time of the GDR
After the World War, the club activities were initially banned by the Allies. From the end of 1946, however, it was possible to row again through a cooperation with the "Handels- und Gewerbeschule zu Potsdam" (HuG). Due to the sponsoring institution, there were various name changes. Under the name “ZSG / BSG Willi Sänger ”, the association was given the “Seekrug” restaurant building in the southern Brandenburg suburb in 1950 , where it is still based today. The boathouse is on the west bank of the Templiner See.
The association underwent a significant change in sponsorship on January 1, 1958. The Ministry of the Interior was henceforth the largest donor, and the association was renamed again. The "SG Dynamo Potsdam" in the Dynamo sports association was promoted and run purely as a competitive sports club in the spirit of a GDR sports club , although it was not a sports club. Until the fall of the Berlin Wall, the club had achieved numerous sporting successes on an international level. Popular sports activities did not take place at the time.
Successes after the turnaround
The SG Dynamo was dissolved in the course of the fall on December 31, 1990. From 1991 rowing in Potsdam was operated by the "Potsdamer Ruder-Gesellschaft", which took over the operation of the "Seekrug" boat house. Part of the personnel expertise from the SG time was retained, so that the PRG immediately belonged to the strongest clubs in reunified Germany: Between 1991 and 2011, the club's athletes won 41 medals at the Olympic rowing regattas and world rowing championships , including 23 Gold medals. On site, the PRG worked closely with the nearby Olympic base in Potsdam .
Popular sporting profile of the present
The competitive sports department of the PRG split off from the club in 2011 after differences of opinion between different club departments could not be resolved. The newly spun off club with the name Ruder-Club Potsdam e. V. is led by the former PRG rower and four-time Olympic champion Kathrin Boron and resides at the nearby Olympic base in Potsdam. After the separation, the old Potsdam Rowing Society is a club with a broad sports profile.
