Piero Poli

Piero Poli (born October 9, 1960 in Cairo Montenotte ) is a former Italian rower and 1988 Olympic champion in quadruples .

Athletic career

Poli began his international career in a four-man with helmsman , in 1978 he was eighth in this boat class in the Junior World Championships , in 1979 he took fourth place in the U23 World Championships ( Match des Seniors ). It wasn't until 1980 that Poli switched to scull rowing . At the U23 World Championships in 1980 and 1981 he won the silver medal with the Italian double foursome. In 1981, Poli also took part in the adult class for the first time at the World Championships and took sixth place in the quadruple with Mario Rosso , Sergio Caropreso and Stefano Lari . In the line-up of Piero Poli, Renato Gaeta , Antonio Dell'Aquila and Stefano Lari, the Italian double scull rowed to fourth place at the 1982 World Championships . In the same line-up, the Italian double scull won the bronze medal at the 1983 World Championships behind the two German boats from West and East. At the 1984 Olympic Games, only the silver medal winners from the GDR and the fifth-placed Czechoslovaks were missing in the double fours due to the Olympic boycott of the Eastern Bloc countries from the 1983 World Cup final. In Los Angeles, the German world champions won ahead of the Australians and Canadians, the Italian double fours in the line-up from 1982 and 1983 reached the destination as the fourth boat.

At the 1985 World Championships , the Italian double scull rowed to fifth place with Gianluca Farina , Piero Poli, Renato Gaeta and Stefano Lari. In 1986 the Italian double scull with Poli, Gaeta, Dell'Aquila and Farina came in sixth at the World Championships in Nottingham . In 1987 Poli and Farina competed in a double scull , at the 1987 World Championships they lost the connection and finished sixth. In the 1988 Olympic season, Poli and Farina moved back into the Italian four-four. In the line-up of Piero Poli, Gianluca Farina, Davide Tizzano and Agostino Abbagnale , the Italian boat won the preliminary, semi-finals and final of the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. Piero Poli ended his sporting career with the Olympic victory.
