Emil Schürer (born May 2, 1844 in Augsburg , † April 30, 1910 in Göttingen ) was a German Protestant theologian .

Life

Emil Schürer attended high school near St. Anna in his hometown, where he graduated from high school in 1862. From 1862 to 1866 he studied Protestant theology at the University of Erlangen , the University of Berlin and the University of Heidelberg . At the beginning of his studies he joined the Christian student union Uttenruthia . In 1873 he was appointed Professor Extraordinarius at the University of Leipzig , in 1878 he was appointed full professor at the University of Giessen . From there he moved to the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel as a full professor in 1890 , where he was rector in 1894/95 . Finally, in 1895, he accepted an appointment at the University of Göttingen . In 1876 he founded the theological literary newspaper , of which he was also editor. From 1881 to 1910 he edited it together with Adolf Harnack .

His extensive work on the history of the Jews in the time of Christ ( History of the Jewish People in the Age of Jesus Christ , 2 volumes, 1886–1890; revised in 3 volumes, 1901–1902) made him one of the most famous modern times in Great Britain and the United States German scholars. A newly developed English-language version of the work was published under the editorship of Géza Vermes and Fergus Millar in three volumes from 1973 to 1987. Schürer died on April 30, 1910 after a long illness.
