Larisa Popova

Larisa Popova ( Russian Лариса Михайловна Александрова-Попова Larissa Mikhailovna Alexandrowa , from 1980 Larissa Mikhailovna Popova ; born April 9, 1957 in Tiraspol , Moldovan SSR ) is a former Soviet - Moldovan rower .

Athletic career

The 1.80 m tall Larissa Alexandrowa rowed for Moldova Chișinău . Olympic rowing competitions for women were held for the first time at the 1976 Olympic Games . The Soviet double four with Anna Kondraschina , Mira Brjunina , Larissa Alexandrowa, Galina Jermolajewa and helmsman Nadeschda Tschernyschowa won the silver medal behind the boat from the GDR and in front of the Romanians.

At the 1980 Olympic Games , Larissa Popova, as she was called after her marriage, rowed with Jelena Chlopzewa in double sculls . Because of the Olympic boycott of most western states, only seven boats took part in the Olympic regatta; the Soviet double scull won with almost a second and a half ahead of the boat from the GDR, another second behind the Romanians won bronze. The gold medal for Chlopzewa and Popowa in 1980 was the only rowing gold medal for the Soviet Union. Apart from the single victories of the Finn Pertti Karppinen and the Romanian Sanda Toma , all other rowing gold medals went to the GDR.

In 1981 Chlopzewa and Popowa rowed together with Tatiana Danilowa , Olga Kaspina and helmswoman Maria Semskowa-Korotkowa in the quadruple scull and won the title at the World Championships in Munich . With seven titles, the Soviet Union in Munich was the strongest team before the GDR. In 1982 in Lucerne and 1983 in Duisburg Tatjana Baschkatowa , Olga Kaspina, Jelena Chlopzewa, Larissa Popowa and Maria Semskowa-Korotkowa won the double fours . The winning streak of the Soviet double foursome was ended in 1984 by the Olympic boycott of the Eastern Bloc countries.
