Giro di Sardegna

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Giro di Sardegna (Italian; " Sardinia Tour") is one of the smaller round trips in Italian cycling . It is not identical to the Giro della Sardegna , which is held by motorsport enthusiasts. With mostly 5 stages, the Giro di Sardegna  - held irregularly until 1997 - was one of the tours that professionals like to contest, be it to add another success to their palmarès, or to collect competition kilometers.

Well-known names like Rik Van Looy , Eddy Merckx (also here record winner with 4 victories), Patrick Sercu , Freddy Maertens , Roger De Vlaeminck and Gregor Braun, also a German driver, are on the winner's list ( see below ) .

The tour takes place on the island of Sardinia (autonomous region of Italy), usually over 5 stages, and has only moderate gradients. At the 1996 event, the highest mountain was recorded at almost 1400 m. The destination was often in the regional capital of Cagliari . In 2012 the race was canceled for financial reasons and has not taken place since then.
