Band Beach was east of the Sword beach section and was in turn divided into the subsections Able , Baker , Charlie and Dog . However, no troops landed on Band Beach. In spacious area behind the band Beach landed associations of the British 6th Airborne Division under the command of Major-General ( Major General ) Richard Gale .

In the hinterland of Band Beach, about 4.5 kilometers away, was the fortified German radio measurement base Distelfink near Douvres-la-Délivrande . It was manned by the 8th Company of the 53rd Air Intelligence Regiment under Lieutenant Kurt Egle. From the landing day on June 6, 1944, the base was under fire from the air. In the following days the British artillery destroyed almost all radio equipment, but could not take the base itself. It was only when 70 to 80 tanks from the 79th British Armored Division were deployed on June 17 that the crew made the last radio message at 17:34 and then surrendered.
