The Åsenfjord is an eastern branch of the Trondheimfjord in the Norwegian province of Trøndelag .
geography
It is located northeast of Trondheim between Frosta , Skatval and Åsen in the area of the municipalities of Frosta, Stjørdal and Levanger and connects in a general northeast direction to the Strindfjord , a section of the Trondheimfjord in its southern area. It is relatively shallow, with depths of around 60 meters in the entrance area and up to 20 m in the interior.
Its tributaries include the Lofjord , Fættenfjord and Avikfjord .
History
From January 16 to July 2, 1942, the German battleship Tirpitz anchored in Åsenfjord or in its branch Fættenfjord. The location within the narrow fjord, surrounded by high mountain ranges, made air strikes on the ship very difficult, and four attacks by the Royal Air Force during this period were unsuccessful. 17 bombing and fighter planes were lost and 64 of their crews lost their lives.
