The Stjørdalselva is a river in the Fylke (province) Trøndelag in Norway . Its catchment area covers 2111 km². The river is one of the best salmon rivers in Central Norway.
The 50 km long river is created near Meråker by the confluence of its source rivers Dalåa and Torsbjørka . It flows through the Stjørdal in a westerly direction and takes in the tributaries Sona , Funna and Forra .
At Stjørdal , immediately south of Trondheim Airport, the river flows into the Trondheimsfjord or its eastern branch, Stjørdalsfjord . The estuary was relocated in 1961 so that the airport runway could be extended into the fjord.
The European route 14 runs in the valley of the river.
