Svinesund Bridge

Svinesundbrücke ( Swedish Svinesundsbron ; norweg. Svinesundsbrua ) is the name of two bridges over the Svinesund Strait , which forms part of the border between Norway and Sweden .

The old two-lane bridge (Norwegian Gammel Svinesundsbru or Swedish Gamla Svinesundsbron ) with a length of 420 meters and a height of 58 meters was built between 1939 and 1942. It was put into operation in 1946.

The new four-lane bridge (Swedish Nya Svinesundsbron or Norwegian Nye Svinesundsbru ), about 1,150 meters west of the old bridge, was inaugurated on June 10, 2005 in the presence of the Swedish and Norwegian royal couple (planned was actually June 7, the hundredth Anniversary of the dissolution of the Union of Sweden and Norway ). The total length is 704 meters, the height of the road is 60 meters above the water. The span of the concrete central arch is 247 meters. The four-lane E6 motorway from Gothenburg to Oslo runs over the bridge . The new Svinesund Bridge was planned and built by the German construction company Bilfinger Berger . In 2006 the new building was awarded the Norwegian architecture prize Betongtavlen .

A toll has been levied on both bridges since July 1, 2005 , although the old bridge in the direction of Sweden was still free of charge until May 1, 2006.
