The Homla is a 8.5 km long river in the municipality of Malvik in the Fylke (province) Trøndelag in Norway .
It begins as an outflow of about 2 square kilometer Gebirgsees Foldsjøen to 205 m in height and opens into Hommelvik , the administrative center of Malvik, in the Hommelvika, a bay on the south edge of the Stjørdalsfjords , an eastern edge of Åsenfjords which in turn a partial section of the Trondheimsfjord is .
The Homla is a mountain stream, the high at its upper reaches three waterfalls crashes: the 40 m high Storfossen ( 63 ° 22 '26 " N , 10 ° 46' 54" O ), the Mettifossen about 150 meters downstream, and finally 350 m further the approximately 50 m high Dølafossen ( 63 ° 22 ′ 39 ″ N , 10 ° 46 ′ 42 ″ E ). Immediately after Dølafossen, the river bends in a sharp 90-degree right-hand bend to the northeast and then runs for about 3 km in an almost straight valley, a fault line formed during the Caledonian orogeny , to Hommelvik. At the southern edge of the place it is crossed by the Europastraße 6 , and then it flows very calmly in several meanders over a length of about 2 km through the place to its mouth.
The river used to be used to drift freshly felled timber, and the remains of a drift canal around the waterfall can still be seen at Dølafossen. Today the river is popular with hikers - the “Homlastien” hiking trail runs along its western bank - and with anglers for its stock of salmon and brown trout ; the salmon can be seen at Dølafossen as they try to jump over this obstacle. Around 2000 there were plans to build a dam on Storfossen, but after strong local protests this plan was dropped.
