Andørja is a 135.27 km² island on the east side of the Vågsfjord . Together with the island of Rolla , which is separated by the Astafjord , it forms the municipality of Ibestad in the southern part of Fylke Troms og Finnmark in northern Norway .
Andørja is known for its high mountains and is the most mountainous island in the north: 11 mountain peaks with a height of over 1000 m - Langlitinden is the highest peak at 1277 m . Andørja is almost split in two by an 8 km long fjord , the Straumbotn .
Most of the residents of Andørja are employed by the municipality. The economic life consists of fishing, agriculture and tourism. The island is known for its statistically good weather and offers diverse and above all year-round fishing opportunities.
The two islands of Rolla and Andørja have been connected to each other since December 2000 by the 3396 m long Ibestadtunnel , a single-tube road tunnel . It starts at Hamnvik on Rolla and ends at Sørvika on the south-western tip of Andørja. Opened in 1994, the 840 m long Mjøsund Bridge (Mjøsund Bridge) leads from the eastern tip of Andørja over the Mjøsund to the mainland.
The former municipality of Andørja
From 1926 to December 31, 1963, Andørja, initially with more than 1,400 inhabitants, was an independent municipality in the province of Troms , created by splitting off from the municipality of Ibestad, into which it was reintegrated on January 1, 1964.
