The Vågsfjord is about 46 km long and up to 20 km wide strait in the Norwegian Fylke (province) Troms og Finnmark .
It runs between the two largest islands in Norway, Hinnøya in the southwest and Senja in the northeast and extends from Eidepollen and the Stongland peninsula in the southwest from Senja in the north to Tjeldsund in the south. The smaller islands Grytøya , Sandsøya and Bjarkøya are on the west side of the sound , Rolla and Andørja on the east side. More than a dozen smaller islands and bars are (including the inhabited Åkerøya and Kjøtta in the north and the south Store Rogla) along its west side. The town of Harstad is on its western bank on Hinnøya.
In the north of Vågsfjord goes into the North Sea leading Andfjorden and south leading Senja northeast Tranøyfjord over, to the south in between Rolla and the mainland to the east running Astafjord and on the east side of Hinnøya the Vestfjord and Ofotfjord and thus u. a. Tjeldsund leading to Narvik .
In administrative terms , the municipalities of Harstad , Tranøy , Dyrøy , Ibestad and Tjeldsund have a share in the Vågsfjord.
