The Mjøsund is about 8 km long and extends from the beginning about 5 km to just 750 meters narrowing strait in the Norwegian Fylke (Province) Troms og Finnmark . It separates the island of Andørja in its east from the Norwegian mainland and is administratively located in the three municipalities of Dyrøy , Salangen and Ibestad .

The Mjøsund Bridge

The sound connects the Vågsfjord in the north with the Astafjord , which runs southwest past the two islands of Andørja and Rolla to the southern end of the Vågsfjord, and the Salangen , which with its foothills Løksefjord and Sagfjord extends far into the municipality of Salangen , in the south. At the northern end of Mjøsund, the wide but short Faksfjord branches off to the east and Dyrøysund to the northeast.

Mjøsund narrows in a funnel shape from north to south and is only 750 m wide in the south between Mjøsundnes on the mainland and Danielberg on Androya. There is the small island Mjøsundholm in the middle of the sound , and there the 840 m long Mjøsundbrua (Mjøsund Bridge), inaugurated in 1994, crosses the sound with the provincial road Fv848.
