The Danube-Oder-Elbe Canal ( DOEK ) is a canal project that aims to connect the Elbe , Oder and Danube rivers . The sub-project to connect the Oder and the Danube is called the Danube-Oder Canal .

The idea of ​​such a canal connection is over 300 years old. In the Czech Republic and Austria in particular, there are strong efforts to expand such a canal, as this would give both countries a connection to the Baltic Sea or a much better connection to the waterway network. The canal would connect the rivers Elbe , Oder and March in their upper reaches. In the case of the Elbe, this would require a great deal of technical effort, since a height difference of 250 m would have to be bridged, which would lead to costs of many billions of euros. The connection between the Danube and the Oder ( Danube-Oder Canal ) would be relatively inexpensive, as the Moravian Gate is the lowest watershed in all of Central Europe and the difference in altitude is only 125 m on the Danube side and 125 m on the Oder side. The necessary barrages and locks for the canal have already been built in Poland and South Moravia.

An alliance of European nature conservationists sharply criticized these plans in 2020, as a much greater intervention in nature, especially in protected floodplain landscapes , and the water balance is required than the expansion of existing rail connections. In addition, the numerous locks would make the waterway very slow.

The idea of ​​a trans-European waterway connection was already implemented with the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal .
