Gert Schulze (* 1935 in Bremen ) is a German architect who mainly worked in Bremen.

biography

Schulze attended the Dechanatstrasse secondary school in Bremen until 1956. From 1956 to 1958 he completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter with his grandfather. Afterwards he studied at the construction and engineering school in Bremen and met his future partner Heinrich Campe during his studies. After completing his studies, he first worked in a Hamburg architects' office, including for buildings on Heligoland . He then continued his studies at the Technical University of Karlsruhe and studied architecture, among others with Egon Eiermann .

Departure hall at Bremen Airport

In 1967 he returned to Bremen and worked in Gerhard Dunkhase's architectural office. In 1970 he founded his own architecture office in Bremen. From 1977 to 1981 Walter Stridde and from 1977 Heinrich Campe were his partners at times. His works have received several awards from the Association of German Architects . His office has been involved in over 400 projects, competitions and reports. He won first prize in various competitions or was among the winners.

In the 1980s he realized several buildings for the University of Bremen . In 1987 he won the competition for Bremen Airport and carried out various construction projects in and around the airport in the 1990s.

From 2004 to 2006 his office operated under the name Schulze Schulze Pampus Architects with his son Jan Schulze and his long-time employee Martin Pampus as his partners.

His second son Phillip Schulze is also an architect.

Work and appreciation

Appreciation

Schulze's first plans from 1970 show, using the example of the office and warehouse buildings in Präzi-Ruff , that he was an Eiermann student . Schulze is now discovering - as he said - Danish architecture too. The Scandinavian influence can be felt in the Tiefer 10 office building from 1978. Also Heinz Mohl architectural language impressed him. Another reorientation followed under the influence of the buildings by Aldo Rossi and the urban context in the 1970s using the example of Swiss developments. The postmodern architecture had, however, little influence on his designs. Schulze pays great attention to the "increased detail", which - according to Schulze, can produce "a kind of poetic charisma". “An important motif” for his office was the “division of the facade into three zones: base, central zone and attic”. His buildings should be in the urban context , such as the Academic Quarter of 2000 on Mary-Astell-Straße.

Even Manfred Schomers recognition of his buildings that "fit harmoniously into the environment" itself, are "regular way in their architectural structure" and where "the architectural detail and the material is often the focus of" standing and focusing on "high level established". The “small-format brick” was his “favorite material”. According to Schomers, however, the Zurich-Haus Am Brill and the extension of the employment office are “not among Schulze's strong buildings”.
