Schomers grew up in Bad Langensalza. The family left the GDR around 1955 and he completed a job-related construction internship, including as a bricklayer. He studied first at the engineering school, later at the technical college for construction in Essen and then from 1967 to 1970 architecture at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen (RWTH). He worked u. a. in Essen in urban planning areas. From 1977 to 1984 he was the head of the building department at the Senator for Building in Bremen at the time of Building Senator Bernd Meyer ( SPD ), succeeding Klaus Marwitz. Schomers and Senate (building) director Eberhard Kulenkampff represented a new regionalism in Bremen. Around 1984 he became a professor for design, spatial art and housing at the University of Hanover .

The architectural office Schomers, Schürmann and Stridde was founded in 1986 in Bremen and successfully participated in many competitions. Schomers also acted as a judge - often as chairman - in many competitions.

Schomers lives in a house at Bleicherstraße 31, which was built in 1862 as a remise of Villa Fritze based on plans by Heinrich Müller , and which he converted for himself in 1979. The Villa Fritze at Osterdeich 3 was demolished much earlier.
