Bremen adult education center
The Bremer Volkshochschule (VHS) in Bremen - Mitte , Faulenstrasse 69 in the former, renovated Bamberg department store is a public company owned by the city of Bremen.
As an adult education center , it is a non-profit institution for further education for children, young people and adults.
history
One of the forerunners of the adult education centers was the educational work of the workers' and craftsmen's education associations and the popular education associations of the 19th century.
It was Pastor Emil Felden ( SPD ), a member of the Bremen citizenship , who suggested founding an adult education center after the First World War , after this institution had already proven itself in other places in the Reich . At that time it was also an attempt to introduce the former soldiers to a university education. Adult education in the political, social, economic and cultural fields should be improved.
The first adult education center in Bremen was established in 1919 and was associated with the establishment of the Lower Saxony Association of Adult Education Centers. On November 2, 1919 in the commercial building , the club Bremer community colleges founded and decided to establish a VHS. In Bremen the founders were u. a. the conservative pedagogue Alfred Schmidtmeyer , the pedagogue and later high school supervisor Gustav Dehning , the teacher Richard von Hoff and other teachers, editors and artists (such as Ernst Müller-Scheessel ). The historian Schwarzwälder mentioned: "Völkisch and national tones were unmistakable". In 1933 the VHS had 35 employees. In 1935 the Bremen Education Senator von Hoff ( NSDAP ) dissolved the association. After that, the tasks were taken over by the district training office of the NSDAP. In 1941 the Bremen People's Education Center was founded, which Hinrich Knittermeyer (NSDAP) headed until 1945.
In October 1946, on the instructions of the American military government, a public youth college was established in Bremen. In November 1946 a branch was set up in Bremen-Nord . The Bremen adult education center developed from this. In 1952 the report was created for the Senator for Education Willy Dehnkamp (SPD). With the establishment of Bremen town houses since the 1970s, VHS branch offices have also sprung up in various parts of the city. In 1999 the VHS was given the legal status of a municipal company in Bremen . The VHS has been based in the Bamberg House since 2007. The VHS Language Center has existed since 2015.
