The Berlin Liberty is a square with shops and shopping center of the same name in the Bremen district Vahr , in the district Vahr-southeast.

history

After the Second World War , around 100,000 apartments were missing in Bremen. The Vahr was one of the first districts in Bremen to meet the large demand for housing. From 1957 to 1962 the Neue Vahr was built with around 11,800 apartments for 30,000 residents on 218 hectares. The Bremen Gewoba was the most important housing association.

The master plan for the development of the Vahr on the basis u. a. the urban planner Ernst May planned a district center on Berliner Freiheit. The name Berliner Freiheit , chosen in 1958, was intended to express the bond with the capital of Germany.

The 65 meter high Aalto skyscraper, designed by the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, was to serve as the “dominant urban structure” . The popular high-rise apartment building was occupied in 1961.

There were several shopping opportunities around the square, from which an open-plan shopping center was created in the 1970s - the Berliner Freiheit . A green area with larger water areas also connected directly to the square. The square retained the “charm” of those years until the turn of the millennium.

With line 1 of the Bremen tram in Kurt-Schumacher-Allee , the square has been opened up since 1967. Bus route 29 also runs past the square. For road traffic, there is an access to the Richard-Boljahn-Allee motorway slip road , which connects the Bremen-Vahr exit of the A 27 motorway with Bremen city center.

In 1977, a new building was built on the square for the Neue Vahr community center as a Bremen community center, which also has a large hall.

Also by decision of the district council , part of the development around the Berliner Freiheit was demolished in 2002 and a new shopping center was built according to plans by Christian Bockholt (BPG), which was inaugurated in 2003 with a ceremony.

There are now around 65 shops on two covered floors with over 18,600  . There is a Greek restaurant, an ice cream parlor and the city library . The Berliner Freiheit parking garage has 700 parking spaces. In addition, there is a regular weekly market on Berliner Freiheit .
