history

Hall 7: View from the Bürgerweide
Exhibition halls: view from the peat harbor

After an architectural competition from 1995 to 1997, the trade fair and event center of the WFB Wirtschaftsförderung Bremen was built on the Bürgerweide according to plans by architects Gert Schulze (Bremen) with planning group Hagg, von Ohlen, Rüffer and Partner (Bremen). The approximately 200-meter-long, support-free halls complement the town hall in Bremen as a multifunctional event hall with max. 14,000 seats and the Congress Center Bremen . Towards the Bürgerweide there is a two-story glass foyer in front of the halls and a two-story structure towards the gable, which takes on retail and service functions. The three large buildings form a contiguous block that completely separates the Bürgerweide from the neighboring Bürgerpark and Hollerallee . Bürgerweide and Hollerallee are connected by an underground passage. The facades consist mainly of glass. The large lattice steel girders above the structure are striking.

The seven combinable exhibition halls with an area of around 40,000 m² are directly connected to the congress center with 21 conference rooms and the town hall. A flexible usage option allows various events to be realized.

The architecture guide bremen writes: “The detailed, restrained modern design language is to be understood as a reference to the dominant expressive form of Roland Rainer's town hall. In comparison with this building in particular, however, the architectural integration of the trusses of the roof structure seems inorganic - perhaps a consequence of the modification of the original plan, in which a higher facade hid the girders. "

The department head at the Senator for Construction Gottfried Zantke led u. a. from: “The ... hardness of the form could suggest a repellent, unapproachable structure - hardly acceptable for public-oriented exhibition halls. The property of the design that dissolves this rigidity of the geometry and adds poetry to it is called transparency. "

In 1998 the project was awarded the BDA Bremen Prize.
