Emil Ritterling
Emil Ritterling (born December 20, 1861 in Leipzig , † February 7, 1928 in Wiesbaden ) was a German ancient historian and Roman provincial archaeologist .
Life
Ritterling studied classical philology and ancient history in Bonn and Leipzig from 1881 . In 1885 he received his doctorate with Victor Gardthausen in Leipzig with a thesis on the Legio X Gemina . From 1887 to 1891 he worked as a librarian at the Royal Library in Berlin . From 1892 Ritterling worked in Wiesbaden, initially as a private scholar , and made a contribution to researching the Roman Aquae Mattiacorum and its surroundings. From 1897 to 1912 he was a route commissioner for the Reich Limes Commission . As such, he led the excavations in the forts Niederbieber , Bendorf and Wiesbaden . In Wiesbaden he was director of the State Museum of Nassau Antiquities from 1899 to 1911 and from 1915 to his retirement due to illness in 1923 . Ritterling was a member of the board of directors of the Association for Nassau Antiquities and Historical Research and took over the publication of the Nassau Annals as the association's secretary for 1893/94 . In the meantime he was director of the Roman-Germanic Commission of the German Archaeological Institute in Frankfurt am Main from 1911 to 1914 , and after the untimely death of Walter Barthel he held this post until 1916. From 1904 on, Ritterling was a full member of the German Archaeological Institute .
Ritterling's main interest was the study of Roman military history and the Upper German-Raetian Limes . The basis was Ritterling's article Legio , which appeared in Paulys Realencyclopädie der Classischen Antiquity in 1924 and is still considered a standard work in Roman military history today. His work on the Hofheim fort is also significant, and is still one of the most frequently cited works on Roman ceramics from the 1st century AD in the northwestern provinces.
