Yann Le Bohec (born April 26, 1943 in Carthage ) is a French ancient historian .

Yann Le Bohec studied in Paris and obtained his Agrégation in 1970 . Since 1972 he has taught as an assistant at the University of Paris X-Nanterre . In 1982 his habilitation ( Doctorat ès lettres ) followed with a thesis on the Roman military in North Africa. In 1985 he became professor at the University of Grenoble II , moved to the University of Lyon III in 1989 and was professor at the University of Paris IV-Sorbonne from 2001 until his retirement .

His research areas are the history of the Roman Empire , especially in North Africa , as well as Roman military history , on which he has published numerous papers. Most recently, as editor-in-chief, he led the development of a three-volume “Encyclopedia of the Roman Army” ( The Encyclopedia of the Roman Army , 2015), which is conceived as an international reference work for Roman military history.
