Rainer Wiegels

Rainer Wiegels (born July 4, 1940 in Solingen ) is a German ancient historian .

Rainer Wiegels studied history, Latin, scientific politics, philosophy and Roman provincial archeology. In 1968 he passed the state examination for the teaching post at grammar schools in the subjects of history, Latin and scientific politics and was then scientific at the universities of Freiburg i. Br. , Bochum and Basel in the subjects of Ancient History and Provincial Roman Archeology. In 1971 he received his doctorate under Herbert Nesselhauf in ancient history at the University of Freiburg on the subject of the Roman senators and knights from the Hispanic provinces to Diocletian (prosopography and origin) . In 1976 his habilitation also took place in Freiburg with a thesis on the tribal inscriptions of Roman Hispania .

Wiegels taught from 1980 until his retirement in 2008 as a professor of ancient history at the University of Osnabrück . His academic students include Krešimir Matijević and Wolfgang Spickermann . In 2009 he was awarded the Ausonius Prize by the University of Trier . From April to September 2011 Wiegels was a fellow at the Max-Weber-Kolleg .

Wiegels is considered a specialist in the Varus Battle and a proven connoisseur of Latin inscriptions.
