Günther Matthias Moosbauer (born June 3, 1966 in Passau ) is a German provincial Roman archaeologist .

From 1988 Günther Moosbauer studied archeology of the Roman provinces, history, prehistory and early history and classical archeology at the University of Passau and the University of Frankfurt am Main . In ancient history he received his master's degree from the University of Passau with an archaeological thesis. In 1996 he received his doctorate in archeology of the Roman provinces at the University of Passau with the thesis The rural settlement in eastern Raetia during the Roman Empire . The work was awarded the Straubing University Prize and the East Bavaria Culture Prize. In 1997/98 he had a travel grant from the Roman-Germanic Commission and traveled to the ancient ruined cities around the Mediterranean. This was followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the Graduate College of the University of Regensburg .

Moosbauer was a research assistant in Passau and since 2001 at the University of Osnabrück . In 2004 he completed his habilitation with the thesis Kastell und Friedhöfe der Spätantike in Straubing. Romans and Germanic peoples on the way to the first Bavarians . In Osnabrück he was senior research assistant in Ancient History from 2004 to 2009 and from January 2010 to the summer semester 2013 he was the first holder of the newly established Chair of Archeology in the Roman Provinces. In addition, from 2001 to 2013 Moosbauer was responsible for the project " Kalkriese , Römerschlacht im Osnabrücker Land". In 2009 he wrote a brief account of the Varus Battle . He is a specialist in Roman provincial archeology and Roman agricultural history.

In 2011, as a member of the Harzhorn research project, he and the ancient historian Rainer Wiegels deciphered the inscription on a dolabra that was found at the end of 2010 during excavations on the Harzhorn . He assigned the tool, which weighs almost 2.5 kg, to the Legio IIII Flavia Severiana Alexandriana based on the stamped characters .

In the successor to Johannes Prammer , Moosbauer has been heading the Gäubodenmuseum in Straubing since October 1st, 2013 . Salvatore Ortisi became his successor as professor in Osnabrück in 2015 .
