Legio II Valentiniana

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Legio II Valentiniana was a legion of the late ancient Roman army.

The sister legions I Valentiniana and II Valentiniana were probably raised by Valentinian I (364-375). It is less likely that these are older, renamed units. A list by the minor Valentinian II. (375-392) is possible, but unlikely, since he ruled the west of the empire under tutelage. It would also be possible to rename the units of the usurper Magnus Maximus (383–388) after his death.

The legion is also documented by papyri in Munesis and Kysis ( Qasr Dusch ), two places in Oasis Magna ( Charga and Dachla ).

The Legio secunda Valentiniana was stationed in Hermunthus (Egypt) in the early 5th century and was under the command of Dux Thebaidos .
