The district was essentially formed from the former Prussian district of the lower district , which the Eichsfeld-Erfurt War and Domain Chamber had set up in 1803 in the newly established Principality of Eichsfeld. The sub-area of Lindau was assigned to the Osterode district . The district had 49,546 inhabitants and was the second largest in the department in terms of population. The district capital was Duderstadt, which was also the seat of the canton of Duderstadt.

Duderstadt is the seat of the sub-prefect , the district council, the civil court and the gendarmerie brigade; the courts of justice were located in the canton's capitals. The sub-prefect was a Mr. Kramer, the district secretary was a Haber.
