Rehungen is a district of the municipality of Sollstedt in the Nordhausen district in Thuringia .

geography

Rehungen lies at the foot of the Dün ridge below the Kriegsberg (485 m). Together with the Hainleite to the east, this forms the northern edge of the Thuringian Basin .

history

Rehungen was first mentioned in a document in 1359. About one kilometer south of the village on the “Schönberg” mountain spur there are still remains of a medieval rampart in which a castle was built. Ceramic remains from the 12th century have been found. The castle secured the Altstrasse over the Dün in the direction of the city of Mühlhausen / Thuringia .

At the end of the 19th century, the search for potash deposits in the region began, followed by the construction of a mine, which for decades became the workplace for numerous residents of the community. In the vicinity of the pit track systems were built for the removal of the extracted raw materials. Mallets and iron as a mining symbol in the municipal coat of arms also remind of this time . From April 9, 1993 to June 3, 1996 the place was a member of the Eichsfelder Pforte administrative association . The municipal councils of Rehungen and Sollstedt approved with a large majority the integration of the municipality of Rehungen into the municipality of Sollstedt , which took place on January 1, 2009. Sollstedt was already a fulfilling community for Rehungen.

Attractions

  • The former Komturhof Utterode was owned by the Knights Templar .
  • The Rehungen village church, which belongs to the southern Harz parish , was built in 1776 in half-timbered construction. She received two new bells in 2007.
  • Memorial: Since 1959 a memorial stone in the local cemetery has been commemorating seven concentration camp prisoners of the Dora Mittelbau concentration camp external command who were murdered by SS men , who, together with their 400 companions in suffering, had to do forced labor in the Neusollstedt potash mine under grueling living and working conditions for the regime’s armament projects . A memorial stone erected on the site of the former potash works in the GDR era for the murdered KPD member of parliament Albert Kuntz has since been removed.
