Bodenstein is a hamlet in the municipality of Leinefelde-Worbis in the Eichsfeld district in Thuringia .

geography

The settlement is on the western edge of the Ohmgebirge plateau about 1.5 kilometers northwest of Kirchohmfeld and one kilometer northeast of Wintzingerode . The location extends on the southwestern stratum of the Bornberg between upper and middle Muschelkalk . The western edge of the Ohmgebirgshochläche is divided into numerous hilltops by several small perpetrators, on one of which is Bodenstein Castle . In the local area there is a spring, the Bornbergsquelle . The source's tunnel extends 74 meters into the Bornberg. The only access road to the village is the district road K201 at the junction from the state road 1012 in Kirchohmfeld.

history

The name Bodenstein was first used in 1089 in connection with a Johann von Bodenstein , an old noble family who probably built Bodenstein Castle and were appointed lords of the castle there. After 1337, the castle and the castle district gradually came to the von Wintzingerode family . Servants and craftsmen then certainly settled in the vicinity of the castle.

From the 19th century Bodenstein was an independent estate district until it became part of the municipality of Wintzingerode in the 20th century and is now part of the town of Leinefelde-Worbis.

Mühlhausen Castle

Another castle complex was located on another mountain spur southwest of Bodenstein, immediately south of Bodenstein Castle. It is probably a preliminary stage of a high medieval manor castle. The internal dimensions on the narrow mountain spur are about 10 meters wide and 50 meters long. A section wall with a ditch in front separates the castle area from the Ohmgebirgsplateau. On all other sides the hilltop falls down into the valley with a steep mountain slope. The term Mühlhausen Castle refers to the time of the Peasants' War , when the complex was possibly used as a warehouse for the Mühlhausen heap to siege Bodenstein Castle or another armed conflict. However, the plant was built earlier. There are only very few archaeological findings, so that an exact age and usage determination is difficult. How it was related to the nearby Bodenstein Castle or whether it was its predecessor cannot be determined.

Others

In the local area, next to Bodenstein Castle with its family recreation and meeting place, there is, among other things, a facility of the DRK educational institute Thuringia and an inn with overnight accommodation. Numerous hiking trails lead into the varied landscape of the western Ohm Mountains.
