history

Gerterode is first mentioned in 1266 as "Gertarroth". This noble family is proven until 1397. The castle, which was protected by a moat in the lowland in the southwest of the village, was then sold by Eckhard von Guttern to the Count of Schwarzburg in 1444. On May 4, 1525, farmers stormed the building, which was mentioned as a castle, and destroyed it. It was later rebuilt for residential purposes, for which it is still used today. The place was founded between 800 and 1200. Gerterode belonged to Kurmainz until 1802 . Gerterode had been an independent municipality in the Worbis district since the beginning of the 19th century and belonged to the Prussian province of Saxony until 1945 . After the Second World War the church was to turn on the edge of the frontier closed area of the GDR and was part of the district of Erfurt . Since 1990 the community has belonged to the newly founded state of Thuringia.

On January 1, 2019, the previously independent municipality of Gerterode was incorporated into Niederorschel. The community of Gerterode belonged to the Eichsfelder Kessel administrative community .

coat of arms

The coat of arms was approved on February 9, 1993.

Blazon : “In the Göpel cut divided by red, silver and blue; in front a silver oak branch, behind a blue goblet, below a silver mill wheel. "

The oak branch indicates the oak groves of the so-called ski oaks that are close to the village. The goblet is reminiscent of a glassworks near the village that existed in the 16th century. The mill wheel indicates the three former mills belonging to the village.

The coat of arms was designed by the heraldist Karl-Heinz Fritze.
