Breitenholz is a district of Leinefelde-Worbis in the Eichsfeld district in Thuringia .

location

The place Breitenholz is about one kilometer east of the old town of Leinefelde in the foreland of the Dün . Breitenholz is also close to the A38.

history

The place name Breitenholz ("broad wood" = extensive forest) comes from a forest area, the remains of which can still be found south of the village in the direction of Bektiven .

Breitenholz was first mentioned in a document on March 29, 1544 on the occasion of a court case against Mattes Zimmermann from Worbis, for whom witnesses from Ershausen, Worbis and Breitenholz vouched. Breitenholz was part of the Hagens jurisdiction ( Deuna ). In 1555 a plague epidemic swept through the Eichsfeld and claimed numerous victims. From a note from 1578 - the place has meanwhile become a desert , one can deduce that the inhabitants fell victim to the epidemic or fled to other areas. At the request of the Archdiocese of Mainz, Breitenholz was exchanged for the village of Vollenborn in 1610 , so that Breitenholz came to the office of Scharfenstein . During the 16th century the Protestant landlords suppressed any attempt to be able to hold a Catholic service in Breitenhagen, and Breitenholz was subordinate to the Niederorschel parish during this time . Only after 1610 did the Catholic part of the population receive the right to hold Catholic mass in the village as a result of the exchange of territory.

Breitenholz is laid out from the settlement structure as an anger village, church and anger with linden tree form the center of the settlement.

Towards the end of the Second World War , a V2 launch base was set up in the Birkunger Wald between Bektiven and Breitenholz .

The place Breitenholz was incorporated into the city of Leinefelde on January 1, 1992. Breitenholz has been sibling with the Hungarian community of Béb since 2004 .

The church in Breitenholz was built in 1695 and the tower was added later. The altar comes from the Franciscan monastery church in Worbis.

Breitenholz has been a place of pilgrimage since 1655. On the feast of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in early July, the faithful make a pilgrimage to the miraculous image of Mary with the child from the 15th century. On the day of the pilgrimage, the statue is placed on a stone table on the west side of the church and after the high mass is carried in the procession in the village. In 1668 the pilgrimage is mentioned in a Duderstädter hymn book. exact details of the origin of the miraculous image are not known.

Anger

The Anger in the center of the village with a linden tree classified as a natural monument is worth seeing. The broad branches are supported by a metal frame and benches set up around the trunk invite you to linger. There is also a fountain on the Anger.

Personalities

The small community of Breitenholz has produced some personalities:

  • Franciscan Fathers Redemtus (Johannes Kullmann 1869–1957)
  • Eugenius (Karl Kullmann 1870–1922)
  • Nikolas Beykirch (1886–1954) Member of the Oblate Order, who served as a missionary in South Africa from 1925 to 1939

Others

As evidence of coarse folk humor, neck names and nicknames that characterize each village developed centuries ago . The following verse was spread about Breitenholz:

Breitenholz as proud,
would have known water and wood,
could have a school apprenticeship and no pastor,
sinn sa avenge stupid fools.
