Johann Ryan Anwar Smith (born April 25, 1987 in Hartford , Connecticut ) is an American football player.

The defender can be used variably on the left side. He plays both in defense, in midfield and in attack.

Career

youth

Smith grew up in Bloomfield, Connecticut and attended the Watkinson School there, a private school. He was active for the school team for four years. In addition to the soccer team, he was active in the running team and managed the 100 meters in 10.5 seconds.

In addition to school, he played in the youth football club Oakwood Soccer Club. It was here that scouts from the English football club Bolton Wanderers became aware of him. Smith moved to the island and received a three-year scholarship to the Wanderers' youth academy.

professional

The 2006/07 season saw Smith sit on the bench for the first time in the Wanderers' Premier League games . He made his debut for the first team in a League Cup game against Charlton Athletic in October 2006. A little later he was substituted on in the Premier League game against Manchester United .

In the next two years he was repeatedly awarded to lower-class clubs. He was able to gain experience at Carlisle United , Darlington FC and Stockport County . In May 2008, his contract was not renewed.

In the summer of 2008 Smith moved to Canada to Toronto FC . He made his debut in Major League Soccer on August 17, 2008. During the 2009 season, Smith announced plans to leave Toronto. After long discussions, Smith was released on June 16, 2009.

In July 2009 he signed a two year contract with the Croatian first division club HNK Rijeka . After only half a year he moved again to the Swedish club Kalmar FF . There he was released on May 25th because he did not meet the requirements.

He was without a club for the next two years. He completed several trial trainings a. a. at the German clubs SV Wacker Burghausen , Kickers Offenbach and 1. FC Magdeburg . In the summer of 2012 he trained with the New York Red Bulls , but was not signed.

In September 2012 he signed with the Finnish football team Kuopion PS , where he played four games by the end of the season.

After another two years without a club, Smit played in 2014 for the two Australian soccer teams Adelaide Raiders and Cumberland United in the second-rate National Premier Leagues South Australia.

Since March 17, 2015 he has been active for FC Edmonton in the North American Soccer League .

National team

From 2006 to 2007, Smith was for the US U-20 national team . He was in the squad for the 2007 U-20 World Cup , but was unable to play due to an injury.
