Ananda Mahidol Foundation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ananda Mahidol Foundation ( Thai : มูลนิธิ อา นันท มหิดล ) is a charitable foundation of the King of Thailand.

aims

The foundation supports graduates (generally with bachelor degrees) with good performance in continuing their studies abroad. It is expected that they will then return to Thailand and help the country in their respective fields.

history

In 1955, King Bhumibol Adulyadej financed a pilot project (Ananda-Mahidol-Fonds), the aim of which was to allow good graduates of the country to study abroad and to deepen their knowledge and skills. On April 3, 1959, the king decided to change the name of the project to the current name and donated 20,000 baht from his personal budget in memory of his brother, King Rama VIII, Ananda Mahidol, who died young. At the same time, he awarded a first scholarship for studying medicine abroad .

In line with the aims of the foundation, several research institutes have been set up where the returning scholarship holders pass on their knowledge to the younger generation.

administration

King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) acted as honorary president of the foundation until his death.

The first ten-member governing body was chaired by the king's mother, Srinagarindra . Since her death in 1995, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn has been the chairman of an 18-person supervisory body.
