Normal way From the Kasseler Hütte over the northeast ridge

The Magerstein ( 3273  m , Italian Monte Magro ) is a mountain in the Rieserferner group in South Tyrol . Together with the equally high Wildgall, it is the third highest peak in the group. It stands somewhat in the shadow of the higher snowy Nock 3358  m , about 1.2 kilometers to the north-west , with which it is connected by a ridge, in which the Frauenköpfl 3251  m and the Fernerköpfl rise as further summits. Seen from the south, the Antholz Valley , the Magerstein is the dominant peak, as it obstructs the view of the Schneebigen Nock. On the north side of the Magerstein, between the north-west and north-east ridge, lies the western Rieserferner , the largest glacier in the Rieserferner group. Like the entire surrounding area, the Magerstein is part of the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park .

The summit was first climbed by Reinhold Seyerlen and Professor Reuschle from Stuttgart with Stefan Kirchler on July 10, 1878. The starting point was the Rieserfernerhütte on the north side of the mountain, which is now the Kasselerhütte (also Hochgallhütte). You reached the summit via the Antholzer Scharte in 2¼ hours. On August 20th of the same year the Viennese G. Gröger and Max Dernberger, also coming from the Rieserfernerhütte, climbed the mountain directly over the north flank and finally overcame a steep ice slope.

Increase opportunities

There is an opportunity to climb from the Kasseler Hütte. First go left at Tristennöckl in the direction of the Antholzer Scharte. A good bit below the saddle you leave the path in a south-westerly direction and reach the summit via the northeast ridge. Alternatively, you can also get to the summit further west in the flank, on the south-eastern edge of the western Rieserferner. This route is a popular ski tour and is also done with snowshoes .

Alternatively, you can also get to the summit from the Rieserfernerhütte . You climb on the marked trail first in a north-easterly direction, then through the south-east flank of the Gelttalspitze and on to Fernerköpfl. From there you reach the summit via the northwest ridge of the Magerstein, and the Frauenköpfl can be bypassed on the north side at the edge of the glacier.
