The Fernerköpfl ( Italian Pizzo di Vedrette ) is a 3248  m high mountain in the Rieserferner group in South Tyrol .

Location and surroundings

The Fernerköpfl is located in the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park . At the summit, the ridges of the adjacent peaks Schneebiger Nock from the northwest, Magerstein from the east and Gelttalspitze from the southwest meet .

geology

The Fernerköpfl consists of light, medium to fine-grained tonalite of the Rieserferner pluton . To the west of the summit begins the Upper Eastern Alpine Old Roof with the dark gneiss of the Schneebigen Nock. The transition of the rock types is clearly visible on the ascent from the Rieserfernerhütte. The contact between the metamorphic shell series and the tonalite is relatively steep on the Fernerköpfl, but flattens out noticeably below the snowy Nocks.

Increase opportunities

The easiest ascent to the summit is free of glaciers from the Rieserfernerhütte through the southeast flank of the Gelttalspitze . The Rieserfernerhütte can be reached from the south-east from the Antholz Valley or from the north from the Reintal . Another option is from the Kasseler Hütte via the western Rieserferner .
