Official form of the list of proposals for awarding the SS service award

The SS service award was a service and loyalty award for all members of the Schutzstaffel (SS), which was donated by decree on January 30, 1938 by Adolf Hitler .

The full wording of the entry regulation read:

“On the occasion of the fifth return on the day of the national survey , I am donating the SS service award as recognition for loyal service in the SS available troops , SS death's head associations and SS junker schools . The details regarding the design, division and form of the award are determined by the statutes to be issued by me. Berlin, January 30, 1938, The Führer and Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler, The Reich Minister of the Interior Frick . "

Articles of Association

The statutes of the SS service award issued on the same day then determine the further details of this award.

Purpose of the service award

The SS service award was a recognition of loyal and impeccable service time of SS members in the SS disposable troops - an early designation of the Waffen-SS -, SS-Totenkopfverband and the SS Junker Schools, which was awarded in four stages that were there :

  1. 4th level for subordinates and men when leaving after 4 years of service,
  2. for leaders, subordinates and men after 8 years of service the 3rd level,
  3. for leaders, subordinates and men after 12 years of service the 2nd level,
  4. for leaders, sub-leaders and men after 25 years of service the 1st level.

What all levels had in common was that the service time was taken into account for the service time in the movement.

Condition and way of carrying

4th and 3rd stage

The SS service award of the 4th level was a round, black-tinted medal, which depicts the SS runes in raised embossing on its front , which are surrounded by an oak wreath. On the reverse was the inscription: For loyal service in the SS and the number 4 in the middle . The third step had the same shape, but was bronzed and showed a horizontal swastika with an oak wreath and sigrun. On the back instead of the 4 the number 8 can be read with the same legend.

2nd and 1st stage

The SS service award of the 2nd level was a silver-plated swastika, which centered in its center showed the SS sigrunes surrounded by an oak wreath on a round middle section. The first stage, however, was of the same appearance, but gold-plated.

Carrying method

The SS service award, like all service awards in the period from 1933 to 1945, was worn on a cornflower blue ribbon on the left side of the chest or on the medal buckle, with the ribbon of the 2nd and 1st tier showing the woven runes in their respective colors (silver or gold ) showed. When a higher service award was awarded, the lower one had to be discarded, but remained the property of the recipient.

Award procedure

Hitler reserved the award of the SS service award for himself. The incoming proposals for the award had to be sent by the Reichsführer SS and Chief of the German Police to the Reich Minister of the Interior Wilhelm Frick , who then forwarded these proposals to the Presidential Chancellery of the Order Chancellery. This then caught up with Hitler's decision. The Reichsführer SS was also able to suggest members of the police for the SS service award. For the first award of an SS service award, the person to be lent received a certificate to be signed by Hitler; for further awards only a certificate issued by the head of the presidential chancellery. Both the certificate and the award became the property of the borrower when they were handed over.

Implementing regulation

The implementing ordinance, also issued on January 30, 1933, stipulated that the proposals from the Reichsführer SS and the Chief of the German Police were to be sent in duplicate to the Reich Ministry of the Interior. A sample printed in the attachment was to be used for this purpose. The proposals should be made every quarter, on March 1st, June 1st, September 1st and December 1st. Time spent in the Wehrmacht , the state police, reserve exercises and time in other recognized volunteer associations also counted towards the period of service. A criminal conviction of the person to be loaned did not categorically exclude the award of the service award if the crime committed was not "particularly serious" and was not "the result of" dishonorable convictions or if this crime had occurred a long time ago and the convicted person had behaved perfectly since then .

Others

The legal basis ends with the implementation regulation. No further changes were made until 1945. The exact number of awards can no longer be determined because it was a mass award. However, the highest number of awards was achieved in the fourth and third stages. In rare cases, the second and first stages were worn by the so-called old fighters (cf. Ehrenwinkel der Alten Kämper ). The SS service award could also be worn equally with a service award of the Wehrmacht. According to the law on titles, medals and decorations of July 26, 1957, wearing the SS service award is not permitted in any form in the Federal Republic of Germany.
