The Police Service Award (1938) was a service award for all law enforcement officers after 8, 18 or 25 years of service. It was donated by Adolf Hitler by decree of January 30, 1938 . The legal basis can be found in the Reichsgesetzblatt of January 30, 1938 (No. 8, pages 55, 56), the full wording of which was:

Ordinance on the Foundation of Police Service Awards

On the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the day of the national survey, I am donating the Police Service Award in recognition of loyal service to the police . The statutes determine the details.   • article 1
    • Purpose of the service award: The police service award is a recognition of many years of loyal service as a police officer.
  • Article 2
    • Classification of the service award: The police service award is awarded in three stages:
      • 3rd level for eight years of loyal service,
      • for 18 years of loyal service the 2nd level,
      • 1st level for 25 years of loyal service.
  • Article 3
    • Form and way of wearing the service award: (1) The police service award 3rd level is a round, silver medal with the emblem of the police embossed on the front and the inscription on the back: For loyal service in the police , in the Center shows the number 8 . (2) The 2nd level police service award is a silver medal cross with the emblem of the police in the middle on a round central part. (3) The 1st level police service award has the same shape as the 2nd level, but is gold. (4) The service award for all three levels is worn on the cornflower blue ribbon on the left side of the chest. (5) The tape of the 2nd and 1st stage bears the emblem of the police in the color of the service award concerned.

Implementing regulation

On the basis of § 7 of the law on titles, medals and decorations of July 1, 1937 (Reichsgesetzblatt Part I, page 725) and Article 4 of the statutes of the police service award of January 30, 1938 (Reichsgesetzblatt Part I, page 55) me at:

  • § 1: The police service award is only awarded to law enforcement officers within the meaning of the German Police Officer Act of June 24, 1937 (Reichsgesetzblatt Part I, page 653).
  • § 2: The period of service, the completion of which is required for the award of the individual levels of the police service award in accordance with Article 2 of the Articles of Association, is credited:
    • 1. the military service,
    • 2. any period of service as a civil servant,
    • 3. the periods of service, according to the provisional implementation regulation of July 26, 1937 for the German Police Officer Act (Reichsgesetzblatt Part I, page 858), to Section 32, to the twelve-year police service period specified in Section 13 (2) No. 2 and 3 of the German Police Officer Act are to be taken into account.
  • § 3: For the production of the proposal lists (§ 1 of the General Implementation Ordinance of January 30, 1938 - Reichsgesetzblatt Part I, page 63), the sample printed in the attachment must be used.

Others

The legal basis ends with the implementation regulation; no further changes were made until 1945. The police service award could, however, be worn alongside a service award from the Wehrmacht. According to the law on titles, medals and decorations of July 26, 1957, wearing the award in the Federal Republic of Germany is only permitted without National Socialist emblems.
