Olin James Stephens II (born April 13, 1908 in New York City , † September 13, 2008 in Hanover (New Hampshire) ) was an American yacht designer with a penchant for wooden ships.

Life

Olin Stephens was the most successful yacht designer in the America's Cup after Nathanael Herreshoff . He designed five victorious AC boats: Columbia (1958), Constellation (1964), Intrepid (1967), Courageous (1974) and Freedom (1980). With his brother Rod Stephens and the yacht broker Drake Sparkman , he founded and ran the company Sparkman & Stephens (S&S), the leading yacht design company from 1920 to 1980. His yacht designs Dorade , with the 1931 transatlantic regatta and in the same year, are legendary the Fastnet Race was won, and Stormy Weather , with which he won the tragic 1935 transatlantic regatta . In the mid-1930s he introduced the scientification of yacht design with Starling Burgess . Towing tests optimized the J-Yacht Ranger , which defended the America's Cup against Endeavor in 1937 . In the 1960s, the cooperation with the Finn Pekka Koskenkyla , who founded the yacht yard Nautor's Swan , began.
