Dominion Line
The Dominion Line was a British shipping company headquartered in Liverpool . The company operated a transatlantic liner service to New Orleans , and later to the Canadian ports on the east coast ( Montréal , Québec , etc.).
history
In 1870 the shipping company was renamed Mississippi Steamship Company Ltd. founded to maintain a liner service from Liverpool to New Orleans. In 1872, with the opening of services to Canada , the shipping company name was changed to Mississippi & Dominion Steamship Company Ltd. changed, but over time the name Dominion Line became common . The ships could be recognized by a red funnel with a black cap and a white band in the upper red part.
Initially, the company operated the Liverpool-New Orleans route with stops in Bordeaux , Lisbon and Havana ; this service was operated until 1914. In 1872 the shipping company opened the service to Canada, the route ran from Liverpool to Queenstown - Québec and Montréal , from 1886 Belfast and Londonderry were also served on the way, but Queenstown was left out. Services to the United States were also expanded and the ports of Boston , Philadelphia and Baltimore added to the route network.
The ships on the line were mostly medium-sized passenger ships, but some cargo ships were also part of the fleet. From the 1890s the ships began to grow in tonnage, so in 1898 the New England with 11,394 GRT and the Commonwealth from 1900 with 12097 GRT were signs of a positive development. In 1902 the Dominion Line was bought up by the US banker JP Morgan and in 1904 it became part of the IMMC shipping trust.
Within the IMMC trust, however, the White Star Line was expanded to become the only passenger shipping company, so that the Dominion Line had to surrender its largest passenger ships to the White Star. Until 1914 the shipping company was only represented with small ships and lost more and more of its importance. In 1914 the passenger services were discontinued and the Leyland Line was subordinate to the freight sector . In 1915 the IMMC went bankrupt and was placed in trusteeship of the US government.
In 1920 the British shipping companies were spun off, including the remnants of the Dominion Line . The Leyland Line took over the Dominion cargo ships and the White Star Line operated its service to Canada under the brand name White Star-Dominion . In 1926 the Dominion name was deleted and the shipping company ceased to exist.
