history

The 12,097 GRT steamship was built for the Dominion Line at the Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast and was launched on May 31, 1900. The 176.27 meter long and 18.07 meter wide passenger ship was named Commonwealth and had space on three decks for 250 passengers of the first, 250 passengers of the second and 800 passengers of the third class. The steamer had a chimney, two masts and two propellers and could reach a top speed of 16 knots. The power of the machines was 8700 PSi .

After completion in September 1900, the ship ran from Liverpool on October 5, 1900 on its maiden voyage to Boston . In November 1901 it made the first of three crossings from Boston to Naples and Genoa , before returning to the Liverpool-Boston route on April 10, 1902. On November 5, 1903, the Commonwealth ran out on its last voyage in service with the Dominion Line. The ship then went to the White Star Line, which took over the Dominion Line's Boston Mediterranean service. In this train the ship was renamed Canopic .

On January 14, 1904, the Canopic ran for the first time for the White Star Line from Liverpool to Boston. Later, as in previous years, she steamed from Boston to Naples and Genoa. On August 23, 1914, she began her first trip from New York to Naples and Genoa back to Boston and New York. She left for the last trip on this route on March 30, 1918. On February 6, 1919, the Canopic ran for the first time in Liverpool to Boston and New York. Three weeks later, on February 27, 1919, she was back on a shuttle service from New York to the Mediterranean. In October 1921 she made her last trip on this route.

From April 13, 1922, the Canopic operated on the route Liverpool - Halifax - Boston. On May 13, 1922, she ran the first of a total of six crossings from Liverpool to Québec and Montreal , until she served the route Bremen - Southampton - Halifax - New York from November 10, 1922 . On May 4, 1924, she drove from Hamburg via Southampton to Halifax and New York, and on September 29, 1924, after a one-time trip from Liverpool, she entered Philadelphia .

On March 20, 1925, the Canopic left Liverpool for her last voyage to Halifax and Portland . In October 1925 she was in Briton Ferry (Wales) with Thomas W. Ward Shipbreakers Ltd. scrapped.
