Johann Karl Erler the Younger

Johann Karl Erler (the younger) (born January 25, 1802 in Baruth , † April 9, 1875 in Magdeburg ) was a German Protestant theologian .

Life

Johann Karl Erler was the son of the father of the same name, Johann Karl Erler , who worked as a theologian in Baruth. His mother was Charlotte Friederike Heinsius (born April 23, 177 in Sorau, † April 7, 1825 in Belzig).

He attended the Princely School in Pforta and then began studying theology at the universities in Halle and later in Bonn . After completing his studies, he took on a teaching position at the grammar school in Sorau. In 1828 he was called a deacon in Sorau and in 1833 he became pastor and superintendent in Treuenbrietzen . In 1836 he was elected senior pastor at the Magdeburg Johanniskirche .

On June 29, 1841, he and 14 other theologians took part in the first pastors' conference called by Pastor Leberecht Uhlich in Pömmelte . By participating, he demonstrated that he was close to an enlightened, rationalist Protestantism . The group of "Protestant Friends", popularly known as the "Friends of Light ", emerged from this meeting . Johann Karl Erler was not a member of this group, but rather distanced himself from it after the group quickly radicalized. On October 31, 1845, on behalf of the sick Pastor Uhlich, he gave a lecture at a meeting of the group of "Protestant Friends" on the subject of Christian rationalism , which would later lead to a church political debate.

In March 1845 he was appointed by the Magdeburg magistrate to succeed the deceased superintendent Johann Christian Ferdinand Aßmann (born June 8, 1792 in Magdeburg; † March 1, 1845 in Magdeburg). Because of his lecture at the group of "Protestant Friends", there had been disputes with state and church bodies for years. The Magdeburg Provincial Consistory confirmed the appointment by a majority, but the minority around the Consistorial President Carl Friedrich Göschel reported to the Ministry of Culture that Erler was not suitable as a rationalist for a church leadership position. As a result, Minister of Culture Friedrich Eichhorn and King Friedrich Wilhelm IV blocked the final confirmation for years. Only after the March Revolution of 1848 and the assumption of office of the new Minister of Education, Maximilian von Schwerin-Putzar , was Erler's appointment as superintendent confirmed in May 1848. He held this office until his death in 1875, where he had a balancing effect between the church political groups.

Johann Karl Erler was married to Friederike Zerrenner (born September 12, 1814 in Magdeburg, † January 30, 1843 in Magdeburg), a daughter of the Magdeburg provost Karl Christoph Gottlieb Zerrenner , from February 5, 1837 .

On March 12, 1852, he married again in Magdeburg Juli Henriette Wilhelmine Fritze (born September 28, 1822 in Magdeburg; † December 24, 1894 in Magdeburg), together they had their daughter Julie Erler (born January 30, 1853 in Magdeburg, † 1927 in Magdeburg).
