Johann Karl Erler the Elder

Johann Karl Erler (also: Johann Carl Erler; * August 21, 1770 in Baruth ; † November 12, 1848 in Belzig ) was a German Protestant theologian and pastor.

Life

Erler was the eldest of three sons and three daughters of Johann Karl Erler (born December 20, 1742 in Baruth; † October 9, 1820 there), a merchant and city judge in Baruth. His mother was Marie Elisabeth Leede (born October 13, 1749 in Golzow , † November 7, 1819 in Baruth).

Erler's school education began at the local school in Baruth and was supplemented by private lessons. From June 4, 1784 to June 19, 1789 he attended the Princely School in Pforta . His stay there shaped his character decisively and prepared him for his later work. Later he also sent his three sons to the Princely School. On October 20, 1789 he began studying theology at the University of Wittenberg , where he attended the lectures of Franz Volkmar Reinhard , Karl Ludwig Nitzsch and Johann Matthias Schröckh . On April 30, 1792 Erler was awarded a Mag. Phil. appointed and passed his 1st theological exam in 1793. He was then employed as a private tutor in 1794. After he passed his second theological exam in 1795, he became a deacon in Baruth on March 1, 1795 . In 1799 he was appointed school inspector in the same place. There he became pastor and superintendent in 1805 . He held the office of superintendent in Baruth until 1822. During his activity in Baruth he tried to improve the elementary school system there.

On February 18, 1822, he went to Belzig as superintendent and tried to improve the primary school system there.

On November 18, 1800, he married in Linderode the daughter of the district physician Dr. Johann August Heinsius (born June 7, 1745 in Sorau; † August 15, 1803 ibid) from Sorau , Charlotte Friederike Heinsius (born April 23, 1777 in Sorau; † April 7, 1825 in Belzig). Together they had three sons and two daughters. His son Johann Karl Erler later also worked as pastor and superintendent.

Honors

In 1827 he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 3rd Class with Ribbon.

In 1845 he received his doctorate from the theological faculty in Halle Wittenberg on the occasion of his 50th anniversary in service . In the same year he received the Order of the Red Eagle 2nd Class with Oak Leaves from King Friedrich Wilhelm IV .
