Walter Hyde

Walter Hyde (born February 6, 1875 in Birmingham , † November 11, 1951 in London ) was a British opera singer ( tenor ) and music teacher .

Hyde studied singing with Gustave García and Walter Parratt at the Royal College of Music in London and was already performing during this time in student performances by Euryanthe, among others . He began his professional career with musical comedies such as Miss Hook of Holland and Three Kisses , until 1908 when Percy Pitt played Siegmund in an English-language performance of The Ring of the Nibelung at the Royal Opera House with conductor Hans Richter and directed by EC Hedmondt committed.

He appeared regularly at the Royal Opera House until 1923, including as Sali in the British premiere of Frederick Delius ' opera A Village Romeo and Juliet under the conductor Thomas Beecham (1910). Until its dissolution in 1920, he then worked frequently with the Beecham Opera Company . In the 1920s he was a singer and board member of the British National Opera Company .

Hyde is considered to be one of the greatest dramatic tenors in Great Britain in the early 20th century. As Siegfried he also appeared at the Metropolitan Opera . Another of his important Wagner roles was that of Parsifal. Hyde was later professor of singing at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama . There were among others John Heddle Nash , Eric Shilling and David Lloyd his students.
