Baron Francesco Ciuppa (born May 29, 1875 ; † unknown) was an Italian racing driver from Palermo .

Career

Ciuppa was one of the first five car owners in Palermo when he bought a Berliet in 1903 . Eight months later he took part in the Settimana automobilistica in Brescia and achieved two victories. In 1909 he was the first Sicilian winner at the Targa Florio . This race has been held since 1906 on the 148.823 km long Grande circuito delle Madonie on the island. Ciuppa won  the one-lap race on a SPA 28 / 40HP Speciale in 2 hours, 43 minutes and 19 seconds, which corresponds to an average speed of 54.674 km / h. Second was his friend Vincenzo Florio in a Fiat , who also organized the race. Guido Airoldi came third on Lancia .

Francesco Ciuppa continued to successfully take part in races in France . In 1911 he won both Coppa delle vetturette in his Sicilian homeland. In 1913 Ciuppa won the Coppa di regolarità , which led from Palermo via Partinico to Trapani . After the First World War he was one of Vincenzo Florio's comrades-in-arms who revived the Targa Florio.
