Peter von Uslar ( Russian Пётр Карлович Услар , scientific. Transliteration Petr Karlovič Uslar ; born August 20 . Jul / 1. September 1816 greg. In Kurowo , Tver province , † 8. jul. / 20th June 1875 greg. Ibid) was a Russian engineer , linguist and officer of German descent.
Peter Karlowitsch von Uslar, known for his research on the languages of the Caucasus , graduated from the Military Engineering University of the Russian Army and served as an engineer officer in the Caucasus from 1837 to 1840, then completed the course of the Academy of the General Staff , made long trips abroad and became after his return to various military-statistical work. He was then commissioned with the ethnographic description of the Caucasus, initially studying the various Caucasian languages and pursuing this study with restless zeal for eleven years.
His numerous works on the Caucasian languages are written in Russian and mostly only a small number of copies autographically reproduced, but were made by the German adaptations of them, which Franz Anton Schiefner published in the memoirs of the Petersburg Academy from 1863 to 1873, the scholar Made accessible to the public. Through them, the confusion of languages of the Caucasus, the "language mountain", has been almost completely unraveled, whereby, incidentally, points of contact between the Caucasian and other languages have not emerged.
Peter Karlowitsch von Uslar died as an imperial major general on June 20, 1875 on his estate at Kurowo near Tver .
