Wilhelm Assmann

Wilhelm August Gottlieb Assmann (born April 20, 1800 in Braunschweig ; † February 8, 1875 there ) was a German historian , educator , textbook author and national liberal politician .

Life

The son of a Braunschweig preacher studied in Göttingen from 1818 to 1822 . He initially worked as a private tutor for the Schulenburg family in Wolfsburg and in 1824 switched to teaching at the Martino-Katharineum in Braunschweig. From 1845 he was simultaneously a teacher of history, from 1849 for German literature and from 1872 for geography at the Collegium Carolinum , where he received a professorship in 1852. Between 1835 and 1848 he was repeatedly chairman of the citizens' association . He was a city councilor in Braunschweig and a member of the Braunschweig State Parliament . In 1848 he was a member of the Frankfurt pre-parliament . On March 20, 1848 Eduard Viewegs published the “Newspaper for the German People”, which was co-founded by Assmann, from July 1 as the Deutsche Reichs-Zeitung . In 1859 he was a co-founder of the national association in Braunschweig.
