Hossein Pirnia Mo'tamen al Molk (* 1875 ; † 1945 ) was a politician, minister and president of the House of Representatives ( Majlis ) of Iran.

Life

Hossein Pirnia was the second son of Nasrollah Khan Moshir al Dowleh . He went to school in Iran and France and began his professional career as secretary to his father, who was foreign minister at the time. Like his older brother Hassan Pirnia, Hossein Pirnia went into politics as a member of parliament after the Constitutional Revolution and became Minister of Education in 1918 and Minister without Portfolio in his brother Hassan Pirnia's cabinet in 1920.

Hossein Pirnia was one of the first members of the parliamentary movement of Iran and was elected as a member from 1906, the constituent session of the first Iranian parliament, until the sixth session. His political activity as a member of parliament was only interrupted by his ministerial activities in 1918 and 1920, since it is not possible under the Iranian constitution to hold a public office and be active as a member of parliament at the same time. In the 3rd, 4th and 6th session, with a time interruptions from 1914 to 1926, in the Parliament because of during the First World War made British-Russian occupation of Iran was not in session, was Hossein Pirnia President of the House of Representatives.

A special position in the parliamentary history of Iran and the career of Hossein Pirnia are the 6 months of the 5th session, in which the parliament decided on the deposition of the Qajar dynasty , in which Hossein Pirnia was also not president of the Iranian parliament. According to the rules of procedure of the Iranian parliament at the time, the parliamentary president had to be re-elected every six months during the two-year session. Mohammad Taddayon, a political supporter of Reza Khan, later Reza Shah Pahlavis , applied for the position of President of Parliament for the next six months. Hossein Pirnia, then withdrew his candidacy and Taddayon was elected as the only candidate. The vote on the abolition of the Qajar dynasty took place on October 31, 1925. Only four MPs had spoken out against the motion, but left the room before the vote, so that in the end all 80 MPs present approved the motion. Nineteen MPs were excused and absent from the vote. Thirteen MPs stayed away from the vote without apologizing. A further twelve MPs only took part in the further parliamentary discussion after a vote.

Hossein Pirnia was also elected as a member of parliament for the 7th session and in 1943 for the 14th session, but refused to accept the mandate in both cases. Hossein Pirnia was considered one of the most capable Iranian politicians of the 20th century. After leaving politics, he spent the last years of his life in increasing loneliness.
